Adjectives describe nouns. Examples: goed 'good', lang 'long', groot 'big', wit 'white'. Dutch adjectives have two basic shapes. The first shape is the stem, which is also the form listed in the dictionary. The second shape is the stem + e, which is the most frequent form found before the noun. Some spelling changes may occur:

witwitte'white'
roodrode'red'
viesvieze'filthy'
lieflieve'dear'

The first form is used in the following cases:

a. if the adjective is not in front of the noun it describes.

Dit programma is goed.This programme is good.
Mijn auto is wit.My car is white.

b. in front of an indefinite het-word

Een oud huisAn old house
Rood haarRed hair
Koud waterCold water

The second form is used in the following cases:

a. in front of a plural noun

Goede programma’sGood programmes
De witte auto’sThe white cars

b. in front of a de-word

De oude manThe old man
Rode wijnRed wine

c. in front of a definite het-word

Het oude huisThe old house
Het koude waterThe cold water

d. when used independently without a noun

Dit is een goedeThis is a good one
Ik neem de groeneI take the green one
