The meaning of Dutch verbs can be changed by adding prefixes in front. From the verb snijden 'to cut' we can derive afsnijden 'to cut off', doorsnijden 'to cut through', uitsnijden 'to cut out'; from komen 'to come' we can derive aankomen 'to arrive', binnenkomen 'to come in', opkomen 'to rise'. The meanings of the prefixes door-, mee-, terug-, and weg- are quite predictable. The prefix mee- eten 'to eat' > mee-eten 'to join for dinner', as in Eet je mee? 'Will you join us for dinner?' spelen 'to play' > meespelen 'to join in a game' The prefix terug- bellen 'to call (on the phone)' > terugbellen 'to call back' geven 'to give' > teruggeven 'to give back' komen 'to come' > terugkomen 'to come back' The prefix weg- gaan 'to go' > weggaan 'to go away', as in Ga weg! 'Go away!' blijven 'to stay' > wegblijven 'to stay away' gooien 'to throw' > weggooien 'to throw away' © DutchToday 2007 |
