| Why do many Dutch words look like English? |
This may be due to several reasons. Many similar words go back to the times that English, Dutch and German had not yet split up, such as arm, hand, brood (= bread), vinger (finger), water, wolf, worm. Dutch adopted many words from English, such as club, scooter, sport, team, T-shirt. English borrowed some words from Dutch, such as cookie. English and Dutch both borrowed the same word from a third language, such as pizza or champagne. |
