Why do many Dutch words look like English? Print E-mail

This may be due to several reasons. Many similar words go back to the times that English, Dutch and German had not yet split up, such as arm, hand, brood (= bread), vinger (finger), water, wolf, worm. Dutch adopted many words from English, such as club, scooter, sport, team, T-shirt. English borrowed some words from Dutch, such as cookie. English and Dutch both borrowed the same word from a third language, such as pizza or champagne.
