Because of the close relationship between Dutch and German, speakers of German risk making mistakes with similar-looking words. Some common examples: bellen: in Dutch this means 'to ring (a doorbell)' or 'to call someone (on the phone)'. doof is 'deaf'. durven: in Dutch this means 'to dare'. eng: in Dutch this means 'scary'. klaar: in Dutch this means 'ready'. klappen: in Dutch this means 'to applaude', in Flanders also 'to chat'. knap: in Dutch this is either 'handsome' or 'clever, smart'. kop: in Dutch this is either a cup or the head of an animal. The human head is called hoofd. slim: in Dutch this means 'smart, intelligent'. German schlimm is erg in Dutch.
