Apart from the obvious words adopted from neighbouring languages French, German, and English, Dutch has adopted many words from more unexpected sources. Yet these words are known to all native speakers. A couple of examples from overseas: klamboe (mosquito net) from Indonesia kroepoek (prawn cracker) from Indonesia pinda (peanut) from the Antilles loempia (spring roll) from Taiwan cavia (guineapig) from Brazil A couple of words from Yiddish that made it into colloquial Dutch: bajes (prison) lef (guts, courage) tof (nice, cool) Mokum (slang name for Amsterdam) © DutchToday 2007 |
