Nouns: How to make plurals Print E-mail

Dutch has two common plural endings: -en and -s. The ending -s is added after

a) Words ending in -el, -em, -en, -er

appelappels'apples'
bezembezems'brooms'
jongenjongens'boys'
bakkerbakkers'bakers'

b) most modern loanwords from English and French, e.g. clubs, cafés, stations

c) diminutives, and most other words in -e huisjes 'little houses', kopjes 'cups', meisjes 'girls', pauzes 'breaks'

d) most words ending in -a, -i, -o, -u (these need an apostrophe before the -s) pinda's, kiwi's, foto's, menu's.

Most of the remaining words take -en

dingdingen'things'
wijnwijnen'wines'
bergbergen'mountains'
wolkwolken'clouds'
worstworsten'sausages'

Note spelling changes:

weekweken'weeks'
potpotten'pots'
huishuizen'houses'
diefdieven'thieves'

Irregular plurals:

kind  kinderen'children'
ei  eieren'eggs'

stadsteden'cities'
lidleden'members'
schipschepen'ships'
